I started out in IT over 10 somewhat long years ago as a computer programmer. My scintillating career started with programming IVR systems (i.e. automated phone systems) and went on to programming MVS mainframes which included COBOL, IMS, DB2, and JCL. I managed to crash a mainframe once. It was my second day on the job too! I’ll save that story for another day. From there I ended up programming ABAP for SAP and dabbled a bit with SQL Server 2000 as a developer. Somewhere in there I developed some Crystal Reports (8.5), Visual Basic 6, and even Oracle’s PL/SQL (gasp!). I’ll even admit I had the pleasure of working with Access quite a bit too. I officially joined the dark side as a DBA somewhere around 2006 and have been loving it ever since, even though they lied about the cookies…
To sum it up, I’m also a wife and mommy in addition to being a SQL Server DBA, Defender of Standards, and Royal Keeper of the Sacred & Holy System Drawings (i.e. Visio). I work with SQL Server 2000, 2005, and 2008 on a regular basis. In addition, I dabble with SSRS and SSIS from time to time as well (somehow need to work SSAS in there). Recently I’ve been able to add Crystal Reports 8.5 back into my repertoire. Occasionally, I’ve been asked to assist with Access. I’m even an amateur radio operator, believe it or not.
I decided to start this blog mostly to share all the fun things I encounter at work. I am a firm believer in developing a sense of humor regarding work; otherwise, I swear we’d all be insane… or insaner than we already are depending on how you look at it. I am by no means an expert in SQL Server or even with databases (or kids for that matter). I’m still learning something new just about every day (note to self: do not give 4 year old a whistle while on a road trip). I am no where near knowing it all. I may post here something I learned regarding SQL Server or work in general. I try to learn something new at least once a day, if at all possible. Having said all that, I hope you enjoy my blog! Do you know of a way to exclude blank rows in a reportset?
I am trying to export customer num, state and email…I am trying to exclude rows that have no emails
have tried these so far
“and email is not null
AND len(email) > 0
AND email like ‘%@%'”
still blanks are showing up!

Do you know for sure if the email field is null? It could contain spaces. Have you tried something like isnull(ltrim(rtrim(email)),”) != ” ? If that doesn’t work, it’s possible the email field contains an ascii null which I’ve run into before. To check for an ascii null, try “select ASCII(email) from …”. If it returns a null, then it’s not an ascii null. Otherwise, it’ll return a value. Hope that makes sense.
